Former President George W. Bush delivered a speech at the G.W. Bush Institute in Texas and it became all about the current administration. Instead of speaking about the “Spirit of Liberty,” which was the name of the event, he took this occasion to tear into President Trump and his American First agenda. Bush doesn’t often speak publically anymore, and even more rarely about politics. He almost never challenged Obama during the man’s eight years.
He viciously attacked the president, indirectly accusing him of fueling bigotry, bullying, and prejudice among other things. The former leader defended globalism, free trade, and foreign interventionism. He never once mentioned President Trump by name.
“We cannot wish globalism away. We’ve seen a return of isolationist sentiments forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places. When we lose sight of our ideals, it is not democracy that has failed. It is the failure of those charged with protecting and defending democracy.”
His statements included implying that President Trump’s agenda is dividing the United States and even the world.
“Bigotry seems emboldened, our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication. There are some signs that support for democracy itself has waned especially for the young.” And naturally, no other politicians have contributed to that?
He cited “casual cruelty,” in politics and suggested that the country needs more positive role models. That is certainly disputable since our nation is filled to the brim with police, firefighters, and soldiers. The liberal activists spend most of their time disparaging those heroes, however. Much of his message, in fact, should be listened to and heeded by liberals.
“Our identity as a nation, unlike many other nations, is not determined by geography or ethnicity, by soil or blood,” he said. “Being American involves the embrace of high ideals and civic responsibility.”
